Ripley Detention Center Release Paths
The Ripley County Detention Center is the verified current adult county facility in Doniphan. It is operated by the Ripley County Sheriff. A person may leave after posting bond, receiving a recognizance or other court order, serving a local sentence, or completing required release processing. Those outcomes can return someone to the community, although court duties or probation may continue.
Other departures are transfers. A person may be moved to the Missouri Department of Corrections after a sentence, sent to another county on a warrant, transported for safekeeping, or handed to a federal or immigration authority. In each of these cases, Ripley County custody ended but confinement may not have ended. Ask the sheriff to name the release or transfer disposition and, when open, the receiving agency.
Confirm a Ripley Detention Release
No official current roster, released-person view, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, app, or public archive was verified for the Ripley County Detention Center. The sheriff’s official social presence is not a systematic custody database. A commercial page disappearing is also not reliable proof. Direct confirmation is the shortest sound route.
- Call 573-996-2129 and ask for the detention or records contact. Use the separately published 573-996-5555 sheriff or jail number if staff route callers there.
- Identify the person with a full name and birth date, booking number, or court cause number when known.
- Ask whether the person is still in Ripley County custody. If not, request the physical date and time that custody ended.
- Ask whether the disposition was community release, bond, sentence completion, court order, or transfer to another agency.
- Corroborate the answer with the source that owns the next event, such as Case.net, MODOC, or a confirmed receiving agency.
The county-wide Ripley County released inmate search and records coverage explains how those sources fit together. For a court-ordered release, review every Ripley criminal case because a hold in one case can prevent departure ordered in another. A docket gives legal authority, while the jail record gives the physical departure event.
Note: VINELink is available for Missouri searching, but Ripley County jail participation must appear live before relying on its status or alerts.
Ripley Detention Records Contact
The Missouri Secretary of State’s current roster identifies Sheriff Rad Talburt and the sheriff’s office contact information. A Missouri Association of Counties listing provides a second sheriff or jail telephone number. Because the two numbers differ, preserve both and ask the main office which line or extension now handles detention records.
The official Missouri Department of Public Safety Ripley County directory provides another government source for the sheriff contact shown below.
The directory confirms the agency route, but callers should still ask which current line or staff member handles a detention release record.

No official records-unit hours, online request form, portal, or local fee schedule was located. Call before visiting. Ask for the statutory records custodian or the staff member who handles jail records, and request an estimate before any paid search, copy, photo, digital production, or programming work begins.
Request Ripley Detention Release Records
A narrow request is easier to route and price than a demand for every record. Ask for existing records, not a new explanation. Useful categories include the booking or admission record, inmate or detainee file, release screen, transfer or movement entry, jail activity-log entry, and property record. The research supports those general sheriff record categories but does not establish Ripley County’s exact software or form names.
- State the person’s full name and enough identifiers to avoid a name-only mismatch.
- Give the approximate booking or confinement dates and any known Ripley court cause number.
- Request the admission date, physical release date and time, release authority or type, transfer disposition, bond status, and booking photograph or repository reference.
- Ask for the open, segregable part of each record and written legal grounds for material that is withheld.
- Request electronic production where practical and an itemized estimate before costs are incurred.
Missouri Revised Statutes section 610.023 requires the custodian to act as soon as possible and no later than the end of the third business day. This is the deadline to respond, not always the date of full production. If access cannot be immediate, the response should explain the delay and provide the earliest time the record will be available.
Section 610.026 generally sets ordinary paper copies at no more than ten cents per page plus permitted staff time. Photographs, electronic media, research, and programming can be priced under actual-cost rules, and advance payment may be required. A standard release screen or existing log entry may cost less than a custom export.
Ripley Detention Release Record Fields
The best release record ties an identified person to this facility, the end of physical custody, and the next disposition. Request the fields that answer those questions without claiming the detention center publishes them in a particular layout.
| Requested field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Booking or admission date | Defines the local confinement period |
| Charge and cause number | Connects custody to the right court case |
| Bond status | Helps explain a pretrial release |
| Physical release date and time | Shows when Ripley custody ended |
| Release authority or code | Separates bond, order, completion, and other outcomes |
| Transfer disposition | Points to a receiving custodian |
| Property entry | Documents handling of held property |
A hearing date, bond amount, court order date, projected sentence date, or news report is not a substitute for the physical release timestamp. Those records can explain the event, but the detention record should establish when the person left county custody.
Ripley Jail Record Retention
The Missouri Secretary of State sheriff retention schedule gives the inmate or detainee file a minimum retention of five years after release. Arrest and booking sheets are retained for five years, as are jail activity logs. Daily prisoner counts have a one-year minimum. These periods are agency recordkeeping rules, not web-posting rules.
A retained record can still contain closed parts. Medical, juvenile, victim, security, or investigative details may require redaction. Missouri’s segregation rule supports production of open portions from a mixed record. Request the basic admission, release, and transfer fields and ask the custodian to cite the specific authority for each withheld part.
If staff report that no “release record” exists, ask about equivalent terms such as inmate file, detainee file, release screen, movement record, transfer entry, booking sheet, or jail activity log. Do not insist that Ripley uses every statewide category. The aim is to locate the existing record that documents the event.
Was the Ripley Release a Transfer?
A 2025 Missouri State Auditor report calls the facility the Ripley County Detention Center and refers to two prisoner-transport vehicles. That fact does not prove the destination of any person. It does show why a departure should not be labeled a community release without checking the disposition.
If the record says MODOC transfer, use the state active offender search after allowing for processing. If it names another county or warrant agency, search that jurisdiction’s official custody source and court docket. If it identifies federal or immigration custody, use only the locator belonging to that agency. The county release date then marks the end of Ripley custody, while the receiving agency’s intake or release is a separate event.
What if the receiving agency is blank? Ask for the open transport or transfer entry and the authority behind the movement. Do not infer the destination from a court case alone.
Court Proof for Ripley Releases
Missouri Case.net can show a bond order, dismissal, judgment, sentence, probation, commitment, warrant, revocation, or later discharge. Ripley County has no separate divisions in the 36th Judicial Circuit, so search by Ripley County and review each charge and docket. The Circuit Clerk, not the sheriff, controls court records.
A court order and jail record should be paired. The order explains the legal basis, while the detention record confirms the actual exit. Administrative processing or a second hold can separate those times. If several cases appear, inspect all of them. Release in one cause does not eliminate an active warrant or commitment in another.
Note: A Doniphan Police arrest record belongs to the city, while a Ripley County detention and release record belongs to the sheriff.
Historic and Current Ripley Jails
Doniphan also has a National Register-listed former Ripley County Jail, Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff’s Residence, sometimes associated with the Hancock Building. The historic jail was completed in 1899 and served as the county’s only detention facility until 1960. It is important local history, but it is not today’s detention center or release-record contact.
Current requests belong at 301 Lafayette Street. A historic image or location should never be placed beside modern contact instructions without a clear caption because it could direct a family member or requester to the wrong building. No separate adult city jail, regional jail, Missouri prison, BOP prison, ICE detention center, or USMS detention facility was verified within Ripley County.
About Ripley County Detention Center
The Ripley County Detention Center is a county jail operated by the Ripley County Sheriff in Doniphan. It is the primary local source for the custody event of a person held there. The sheriff record may document booking, the reason for confinement, release, transfer, property, and other detention activity, subject to retention and access rules.
Local operational facts that were not verified should remain unknown. No official source reviewed established a standard release door, release hour, weekend procedure, property-pickup rule, transportation service, bond-payment method, pay-to-stay charge, or internal booking-photo policy. Call the facility before travel and ask only for the process that applies to the identified record or release.
